Small acts of kindness come in various forms, from giving monetarily and volunteering your time, to listening and praying for others. Actually, there are endless ways we can brighten someone’s day.

One act of kindness I’ve recently enjoyed and participated in was the “Pay It Backward” while I was in the drive-thru at Chick-fil-A. How surprised I was when I pulled my car forward and the girl at the window smiled brightly and announced my meal was free. How could that not put a smile on my face? And the kindness from the driver before me was contagious. As I pulled away from the window, I hoped I’d done the same for the driver behind me.

Another small act of kindness is volunteering. When I’m not writing my next novel, I’m a volunteer coordinator for a nonprofit organization. I send volunteers from my community to different organizations that have a variety of needs. These organizations may be a food pantry, a homeless shelter, the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, churches, and the list goes on. One thing for sure: there is always a need.

The Lord calls us to love Him first, then to love others. What better way is there than to volunteer and show the love of Christ to people of all walks of life. A small act of kindness can change so much.

For instance, for a few months now, while roaming Facebook I’ve come across this one individual repeatedly. Not only on her posts but when I see others describing their need for prayer. I see her comments—the spiritual truths of hope, peace, and the love of the Father.

You need to understand that she is fighting her own battles with stage 4 cancer and the loss of a loved one. My heart has been broken for this woman I know by name only. Yet I know her by her fruits, her words, her love, and her compassion for others. She’s my sister in Christ.

While she is pointing them to Christ and His unending love, I sit in amazement of how she tends to others’ spiritual needs.

She’s beautiful.

She is a living sacrifice, a testimony to others.

She is God’s masterpiece, sharing small acts of kindness as she perseveres with her own concerns for her health. Every word she writes is the breath of life to all who read her posts.

Have you ever been touched by a small act of kindness? If so, share your experiences. Whether those experiences are monetary, volunteering in your community, or spiritual, these acts are a blessing from the Lord—to the giver and receiver.

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” Oscar Wilde
