Lovely weather is approaching as we march through April, so this is the perfect time to talk about spring cleaning. Since I did bring up spring painting a few weeks ago. 🙂
A subject I don’t like to think about. I could shift to fall cleaning and forget this season.
Maybe you agree with me. Others are ready to open those closet doors, grab a broom, and have at it.
While cleaning physically is beneficial, more important is spring cleaning the soul. Yes, I mean the mind, the will, and the emotions.
Yikes.
After a long winter, warm sunshine invites us to clean the house and yard. A long winter in the soul full of disappointments, disagreements, bitterness, loss, or many other hurtful things can pile up in our lives and create chaos.
It’s time to let go and let the Holy Spirit sweep through and do the work only He can do. By yielding our mind, will, and emotions to the will of God, we find the cleansing we seek. As we surrender ourselves to Him, let’s be diligent to:
(1) Seek God through prayer. Taking time to talk and listen to God can give us an occasion to repent and let God clear away the mess.
(2) Stay in the Word of God. His word is life-giving, so let the Bible speak as we read, study, and yield our minds to it. His Word is a lamp unto our feet, or a strong flashlight to use in the dark closet of hidden things in our souls.
(3) Be open and teachable to correction and direction. God will point us to the right path as we listen to His direction. He will work on the attitudes and actions in our lives that need to change so we can be all He created us to be.
(4) Stay connected with other Christians. One of the reasons Satan can be so disruptive at times in our lives is that we become “lone rangers” and don’t ask other Christians for help. God gave us all talents and abilities to help one another, but if we aren’t connected to Christians through a church or fellowship, we cannot benefit from one of God’s greatest gifts—each other.
So let’s get out that mop and dust rag and start spring cleaning. While we’re at it, we can ask God to start the spring cleaning we all need in our lives. Step back and watch as you become sparkling, shiny, and set apart.
What do you think of the concept of spring cleaning your soul? I’d love to talk about it…
