Today, I’m thrilled to introduce my author friend and Inspired Prompt co-founder, Betty Thomason Owens. Betty and I have attended writers conferences together and always enjoy learning more about the writing world. She’s just released her third book in the Legacy series, Rebecca’s Legacy. I loved it and I know you will too. Now onto the questions:

Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?

I was “mama” to a couple of Charolais heifers when I was twenty. How about that for a little-known fact? Round-the-clock bottle feedings can create quite a bond. Imagine two 800-lb. babies dashing toward you. The ground quaked and tremored. I panicked every time it happened, though I knew (prayed) they’d swerve at the last second.

The bovine mama stent prepared me for what lay ahead. Mother to three boys. What a ride! And that prepared me to write. I spent many hours with my head buried in books, training my sons to bury their heads in books. We logged lots of hours at the neighborhood library.

What made you want to become a writer?

Reading. I read a lot of books, in several genres. I read classics, and mysteries and even the “Miss Read” series (Dora Jessie Saint). I loved her books. I was in my thirties when the storytelling gene kicked in. I wanted to write. So, I found a short-story writing class at the University of Louisville, and I was hooked.

Million dollar question, are you working on another book?

First, let me just say, I was very fortunate to sell two different series at the same time, but I would not recommend writing two series at the same time. My present work-in-progress is the final book in the three-book Kinsman Redeemer series. The first book is the story of Ruth set in the 1950s, in west Tennessee—Annabelle’s Ruth. In book three, Annabelle, the Naomi character, falls in love.

What is something memorable you have heard from your readers/fans?

I’m glad you asked that. One fan floored me with her post on Facebook: “Your books are awesome! I read one series and thought it was wonderful. I loved the characters and the depth you gave their lives and feelings. Then I started to read another series thinking nothing can beat the characters in the previous series I read, because I fell in love with them. And then there they were. New characters in a new setting with new challenges and struggles and I loved them too. That has been my experience with all three series of yours I have read. I am eagerly awaiting your next book to see how your characters evolve and grow. Your talent is simply amazing.”

If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?

In real life, I’m a retired office manager with a couple of part-time bookkeeping jobs. I enjoy bookkeeping as long as there’s plenty of money. 😊 When you’re required to pinch pennies, tighten the budget, make difficult decisions on who you can pay when, it kind of sucks the joy out of the work. I’m not sure what else I could do. I live in suburbia these days, so we can’t raise cows, though some of the neighbors have chickens.

I like the idea of pet therapy. Not sure I’d be good at it, but it’s a great excuse to own a pet (I’m pet-free now).

Rebecca’s Legacy

What will it take to teach a spoiled heiress that the greatest legacy is love?

Nancy and Robert Emerson’s daughter Amy Juliana is doing her best to follow in Mom’s rebellious footsteps.

Her desperate attempt to escape Dad’s control comes at the worst possible time. A threat against their family and Sanderson Industries has Robert Emerson taking extra steps to guarantee his family’s safety. He sends Amy, an heiress and a debutante, to the country to work on a produce farm run by Aunt Rebecca. Humiliated and angry, Amy contemplates a path that will lead her even farther from home, away from Dad’s protection.

Will Aunt Rebecca’s quiet strength and unconditional love be enough to still the prodigal daughter’s rebellious ways, and open her heart to the plight of others around her?

Matt Wordsworth is the man Robert calls upon to help keep his daughter in line. She thinks the guy is an old fuddy-duddy. By the time her ideas about him begin to change, it may be too late. When an old friend tests her loyalty, she is forced to face her past to overcome a guilty conscience. But, is she playing into the hands of the enemy?
