I want to be comfortable. I want a self-cleaning house and a chef to cook my meals. I desire to sit and read while lovely music plays in the background and fresh cookies and tea are brought to me on a tray.

No worries.

No fears.

Comfort.

The problem is that’s not the world that I live in, not the world most of us live in. Most of us have to work, whether at home or at a job. We have to plan, cook, work on a computer, clean, mow, shop, and plan some more.

But I still like to be comfortable.

And I think God is okay with comfort, as long as we don’t get out of control with our need for it and turn to other things instead.

And I don’t just mean the usual suspects: drugs, alcohol, or sexual no-nos.

I’m talking about the ones I tend to lean on. I can get so stressed out at times that I can make something simple into a god.

Lower case g.

It could be a video or phone game, chocolate, coffee, shopping, etc. Things I run to for comfort. Instead of God, the one who created me and therefore knows what I need. When I need it. What will truly bring me comfort.

Now, none of the above things I mentioned that I turn to are bad in themselves. Only when my priorities have shifted away from God.

What can I do to get back on the right track?

The best practice, which is, by the way, Biblical, is to fast.

Yep.

Just bite the bullet for an extended period of time and give it up. The games, chocolate, coffee, and shopping.

Whatever stands between you and the true Comforter.

And when you have a craving during the fast, pray. Seek. Ask the One who made you to comfort you. Like I plan to do.

So I can receive comfort from the right source.

And be comfortable once again.

If you’d like to share, let me know what you tend to turn to when you feel uncomfortable. Maybe we can pray for each other …
